How to summarise lecture notes

Summarise lecture notes by identifying what the lecture was trying to teach, keeping only the key ideas and how they connect, and ending with questions you can test yourself on. A good summary is much shorter than the notes and is something you can revise from.

What most advice leaves out

Many students "summarise" by copying their notes in neater handwriting. That keeps the length and loses the point. The work of summarising is deciding what matters, which forces you to understand the lecture. A summary that ends in questions is also ready for revision, while one that ends in paragraphs still has to be turned into something you can practise.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Find the objectives

Start with the learning outcomes on the slides or module guide. If there are none, ask: what should I be able to explain after this lecture?

  2. 2

    Pull out key ideas

For each objective, keep the definitions, mechanisms, steps or arguments that answer it. Drop examples you do not need and repeated points.

  3. 3

    Show the links

Note how ideas connect: this causes that, this is an example of that. Links are what exam questions often test.

  4. 4

    Flag gaps

Mark anything you could not explain in your own words. Those are questions for your tutor or for more reading.

  5. 5

    End with questions

Finish every summary with a few questions on its key points. Next time you revise, answer them before rereading anything.

Common mistakes

  • Rewriting the notes at the same length.
  • Summarising slides you have not understood, so the summary carries the confusion forward.
  • Never turning the summary into questions.

Questions

How long should a lecture summary be?

Short enough to review in a few minutes. If a summary is nearly as long as the notes, it has not done its job yet.

Should I summarise straight after the lecture?

Soon after is best, while you still remember what was emphasised. It also shows you early what you did not understand.
